152 Rath Yatras, 52 Shobha Yatras in state on July 1

Gujarat police are gearing up hard for the 145th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath to be taken out on July 1. Top police sources said this time a total of 152 Rath Yatras and 58 Shobha Yatras will be taken out across the state on the day. However, police are taking extra measures to ensure peace in the state, for which they have identified a total of 25 areas in cities/towns in the state where extra bandobast will be deployed and more preventive action will be taken ahead of the festival.A top official said the entire police force has already been deployed to ensure law and order in the state. “We have directed the force to keep an extra vigil in sensitive districts that have been identified and where there is possibility that some elements may try to disturb peace and communal harmony,” the official said.Sources said 25 sensitive areas have been identified in cities, including Ahmedabad, Himmatnagar, Mehsana, Viramgam, Junagadh, Anand, Kheda, Modasa and Bhavnagar. “We have instructed SPs and officers of these 25 districts to keep their forces on the roads and keep an eagle eye on the situation before Rath Yatra,” the senior police officer said.A meeting of senior police officials of the rank of SPs, DSPs and inspectors was held recently over the security aspect of the Rath Yatra. The meeting was chaired by the state’s top police officials.Police have taken extra precautions in Ahmedabad to maintain law and order as Eid is soon to follow. “We will barricade the entire route of Rath Yatra and also keep an eye that no fringe element infiltrates the Yatra,” said the official.No procession will be allowed to be taken out without police permission. “Certain conditions will be laid down before giving permission to different Rath Yatras in the state. We are also keeping an eye on certain religious organisations and their leaders, who are expected to create an atmosphere of fear among the people just before the Rath Yatra. We will take strict action against anyone who will try to disrupt the law and order situation,” the senior police official said.In sensitive areas like Khambhat, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Himmatnagar and Ahmedabad, police are organising cricket tournaments, blood donation camps, meetings between community leaders to ensure peace during the festival. “More companies of CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) and BSF will also be called in for bandobast.
