Documentary on International Cooperation for Peace in Mindanao Premieres in the Philippines

September 22: A documentary film about the international peace-building efforts for Mindanao in the Philippines, one of the world’s long-term conflicts sparked by violence that left over 120,000 deaths and millions of displaced persons since the 1960s, was released and screened in the Philippines. In celebration of National Peace Consciousness Month, a peace documentary titled “Great Legacy” premiered in a cinema in Davao City on the evening of September 6, 2022. Around 500 representatives from the government, education sector, media, as well as civic society leaders, religious leaders across the country and peace advocates from Mindanao attended. The documentary was produced by SMV Media Group, a broadcast company based in Seoul, South Korea, in collaboration with Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international non-profit organization affiliated with the UN ECOSOC advocating for global peace. The film showcased HWPL and actors who engaged in peace-related activities in Mindanao.Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte congratulated by saying, “By showing people documentaries and films on peace, we may encourage more to be one with us in our peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts for our communities.”HWPL’s peace movement in the Philippines started when HWPL Chairman Lee Man-hee, a Korean war veteran and peace activist, visited Mindanao several times since 2013. He mediated a civilian peace agreement signed by Archbishop Emeritus Fernando Capalla and then Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” G. Mangudadatu on January 14, 2014, in General Santos City. Before the audience of 300 people, including politicians, university professors, religious leaders, and students, the representatives on that day promised to cooperate in ceasing the conflict and building peace, especially in the Mindanao region, which has long suffered the aftereffects of war. This agreement became the starting point of HWPL in raising public awareness about peace not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines, based on the universal principles of mutual understanding, respect, and harmony. HWPL’s peace initiatives include law enactment for peace, interfaith dialogues, peace education, and youth and women empowerment, which has brought leaders in different countries to support peace in Mindanao. In the film, Martin Lee Hojian, former chairperson of the UN Human Rights Commission of the United Nations, praised HWPL, led by Chairman Lee, and the Filipino people, who had a keen passion for peace. Also, Nabil Tirmage, Asia Pacific Broadcasting Development Organization program manager, said that the civil peace agreement in 2014 is an “amazing case of realization of peace that the world should study”.“The conflict in Mindanao has been a major variable in not only in Southeast Asian but global situation. The establishment of peace in Mindanao was a global task and required constructive intervention from the international community. In particular, it will be possible to understand through this documentary film that the efforts at the private sector, like HWPL in Mindanao, are the foundation for peace to settle down,” said an official of HWPL.SMV Media Group announced that the documentary film would be accessible through various channels in different countries, including broadcasting stations and multiplex theaters.

HARSH Solanki, a sanitation worker from Gandhinagar, Gujarat, got a “surprise” invitation from Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal Sunday, for lunch at his chief ministerial residence in Delhi. By Monday, the 20-year-old had had a taste of the full course: flight tickets, airport reception, a tour of AAP’s mohalla clinics and government schools, and to wrap it up, a photo-op with Kejriwal against a life-size B R Ambedkar portrait. While the Congress dismissed it as political showmanship, and the BJP called it a gimmick, AAP clearly enjoyed the day, from Delhi to Gandhinagar – as did the overwhelmed Solankis.Harsh, a contractual worker with the Gandinagar civic body, was accompanied by his mother Lata Ben and sister Solanki. For the family, it was their first time on a flight; for Lata Ben, who also works as a safai karamchari, her first time ever in Delhi. It was at a meeting with sanitation workers in Ahmedabad Sunday that Harsh had got up to ask Kejriwal whether he would visit their home, like he had gone to an autorickshaw driver’s home in the city a few days ago. The CM replied that before elections, politicians had made a habit of visiting Dalit homes and eating. But, no one called them home, he said. And he would. The Solankis landed in Delhi at around 10.20 am Monday. They were welcomed at the airport by AAP Rajya Sabha MP and Gujarat election co-incharge Raghav Chadha, who gave them a shawl as a token of respect. In the around three hours between then and when the Solankis reached the CM house, the family was taken first to a government school and then a mohalla clinic in West Vinod Nagar. They were given a tour of the school by Principal Mary Jyotsna.Harsh, who studied up to Class 10 before taking up the safai karamchari job to supplement the family income, said he came away “mesmerised” from the school. “I have never seen a government school in Gujarat with such facilities like a swimming pool… These should be created in Gujarat too so that children from poor families can get a good education.”The family of five survives on the money earned by Harsh and his mother.Sister Suhani said she had studied in a private school up to Class 12, and the Delhi government schools were better than even her school. “There is no comparison. Private schools charge huge fees and yet the facilities are not up to the mark and there is discrimination between girls and boys.”Her education halted after she finished Class 12 two years ago, Suhani said she expects she will be married off soon.Lata Ben said she admired the infrastructure and roads in Delhi. “The city is very clean, there is no garbage and potholes on the road. In Gujarat, the entire area becomes a swimming pool, even if it rains for 10 minutes.”At the CM house, an emotional Harsh hugged Kejriwal, and presented him a portrait of Ambedkar. He called it “a very proud moment for us”. “I cannot believe I am standing here with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal sir… It still feels like I’m daydreaming.”Harsh repeated what Kejriwal said at Sunday’s meeting. “In the last 75 years (of India’s Independence), no leader has invited a Dalit boy to his home for lunch… He (Kejriwal) is the only and first leader in the country to do so and eat with us.”Kejriwal said: “My family members and I were very happy to receive the Solankis. I am very thankful to them for coming so far from Gujarat.” The CM added that the next time he goes to Ahmedabad, he would visit Harsh’s house and meet the people of his community.Lata Ben said she never thought she would see this day. “Harsh keeps attending these political meetings and comes home and (talks politics)… Last night, when he said we should pack our things and be ready by 6 am to meet Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi, I did not believe him. I though he is joking like always and said, ‘Tu pagal ho gaya hai, jaa soja (You have lost it, go and sleep)’. Later, at midnight, he told me the tickets were booked. In the morning, as a car arrived to take us, as did the media, my blood pressure went low in shock and excitement.”The lunch with Kejriwal has huge significance, she stressed. “Who calls a Dalit family to their house in today’s time? That too for lunch,” Lata Ben, who is posted in the Gujarat Sports Authority office and earns Rs 8,000 per month, said.Asked if they were regular voters and would tell their neighbours about Delhi, Harsh said: “Yes. We got electricity a year ago after 15 years of request. In Delhi, people enjoy free electricity, education, health services… AAP is growing and people like it for its honesty.”The 20-year-old also has a personal wish: that his safai karamchari job is regularised by the new government. After visiting Kejriwal’s house, the family was to visit Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka before flying back to Ahmedabad.Congress leader Romesh Sabharwal posted a video of Raghav Chadha welcoming the family to Delhi, while tweeting, “Good fixing. We did this our whole life but we don’t give publicity to this culture.”AAP leaders, however, insisted the CM’s invitation to Harsh was entirely on the spot. “Once he asked Solanki to come to Delhi, we made inquiries and booked the tickets,” a leader said.A senior leader added: “Of course, it was all part of politics and optics, but the CM’s decision to call Solanki and his family home was completely spontaneous.”With AAP increasingly putting Ambedkar at the centre of its politics, the leader said Kejriwal regularly visits the Valmiki temple in Delhi, which falls in his constituency. “For decades, people have used the Dalit community for their gains, but this is the first time a CM has accorded respect to a person from the community,” the leader said. While even before his Ahmedabad visit to an auto driver’s home, Kejriwal had visited another such driver in Delhi, and others in Punjab, it is the first time he has invited a common man to his home for lunch.Back in Gandhinagar, there was some confusion over Solanki’s exact residence. AAP Gujarat spokesperson Karan Barot claimed he was a resident of Shahibaug. But later, the party shared an itinerary of his visit to Delhi in which Gandhinagar was shown as his address.A contact of a family acquaintance, shared by AAP, told The Indiana Express, “I do not get to meet him much, but I know he has been working as a sanitation worker on contract for the last three-four years.”(With inputs from RASHI MISHRA, Ahmedabad)

Calling on Gujarat’s youths to bring about change by motivating their families to vote for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections, Delhi Chief Minister and party convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that for Gujarat to change like Delhi and Punjab, its “youths will have to stand up”.Addressing a rally in Nikol area of Ahmedabad along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kejriwal said, “This election is for a revolutionary party, for new politics like ours, it is a party for the youth… those who are a little older will say, ‘I have always been with the BJP, I have always been with the Congress’, they don’t listen… It is your responsibility to ensure votes of your family.”Earlier, Kejriwal and Mann addressed another rally of outsourced, contractual and sanitation workers. At the Shahibaug rally of sanitation workers, the Delhi CM responded to an invitation by Harsh Solanki, a Dalit, to dine at his home, by inviting his whole family to dine with him in Delhi on Monday.Kejriwal said, “I have seen that every leader visits the house of a Dalit for a meal to show off. Till today, no leader has invited a Dalit to his house for a meal. Will you come to my house to have food together,” he asked and Solanki promptly accepted. The Delhi CM added, “Flight tickets will be sent to you. And I promise that I will come and eat at your place the next time I visit Ahmedabad.”Hopeful that the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections would be nothing less than a “movement or revolution”, the AAP supremo said, “They abuse me everyday calling me a cheat, a maha thug, a Khalistani, terrorist… what is my fault? I am only saying I will build schools, hospitals and provide jobs.”Referring to “WhatsApp groups of Gujarat”, Kejriwal said he had seen a message circulating that said, “If you vote for Congress Sonia Gandhi’s son will prosper, if you vote for BJP, Amit Shah’s son will prosper, but if you vote for Aam Aadmi Party, then every child of Gujarat will prosper”.Kejriwal has put out a calendar for hiring for government jobs such as talatis, teachers, sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, along with promising an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,000 each for those who waited till they were employed.“If properties of leaders of both these parties (BJP, Congress) is sold, Gujarat can be rid of all debt,” said Kejriwal.Referring to the slogans shouted at him in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Vadodara airport when he visited on September 20, Kejriwal said, “I am telling those people, I will never tell you to change your slogan but if our government comes to power we will give you also the jobs and unemployment allowance.”By improving schools, raising standard of education and hiring teachers, setting up mohalla clinics, each creating five new jobs, supplying ration at the doorstep like in Punjab, 20 lakh jobs can be created in Gujarat, he said.Speaking at the event, Mann urged the youth to walk the path of the late revolutionary Bhagat Singh and said, “He was hanged at the age of 23… At the age at which youths ask their fathers for a motorbike, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru asked for their country from the British.”“The circumstances under which he got Kranti were very different… you have to bring Kranti by pressing the button with the broom… Remember that button is not of the lotus, or of the hand or of an bow and arrow or of the elephant or broom but of your future,” said the Punjab CM.At the rally of contractual and outsourced workers and daily wagers, Kejriwal promised to make all temporary government jobs permanent and ensure “equal pay for equal work”. Doing away with “thekedari pratha” (middlemen and contractor systems) he said the wages of the workers would directly go to their banks.“This government has been keeping you on contract for so long, it is now your chance to remove them from the contract of 27 long years,” said Mann .Newsletter | Click to get the day’s best explainers in your inbox“We use the tax money which we get from the people and they call it ‘free ki revadi’. In other countries such as Canada and the US, they call it ‘social security’… They have sold most of the public assets such as the LIC, and other public units, the only thing they have bought is the media,” said Mann.Adding that AAP is the only party that believes in Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Kejriwal said , “Ambedkar has said that education is important for growth. We will bring that and make accessible to everyone.”

Arvind Kejriwal said if AAP comes to power in Gujarat, it will raise money by stopping corruption.Ahmedabad: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said if people of Gujarat bring the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to power, then every child in the state will prosper.Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed a gathering of youngsters in Ahmedabad where Arvind Kejriwal targeted both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress in Gujarat, where the Assembly elections are due in December this year."I was seeing a wonderful message being shared in a Gujarat WhatsApp group that I follow. It says if you vote for Congress, then Sonia Gandhi's son will prosper. If you vote for BJP, (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah's son will prosper, and if you vote for AAP, then every single child of Gujarat will prosper," the Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convener said.Like the AAP governments provided 12 lakh jobs in Delhi and 20,000 in Punjab in less than six months, the party is committed to provide 10 lakh jobs in Gujarat when it comes to power in the state, he said.Arvind Kejriwal again listed the "job calendar" for Gujarat and said the AAP will provide 10 lakh government jobs by filling teachers' posts in schools, opening new colleges and mohalla clinics, and providing more doctors and health care staff in hospitals, among others."I believe if 10 lakh jobs are less, we will be able to provide 20 lakh government jobs in five years," he said.AAP will also provide an unemployment allowance of Rs 3,000 per month to youth till they get a job, he said.Arvind Kejriwal claimed people have been voting for BJP because the "Congress is even worse," but this time they have an alternative in AAP -- "an honest party with fresh faces and new politics." He said "leaders of both the BJP and Congress have stolen so much of public money that if their properties are sold, then I believe the entire debt of Gujarat can be paid"."If the AAP forms a government, we will spend every single penny on you (citizens), and will not let it be stolen," he said.Arvind Kejriwal said if the AAP comes to power in Gujarat, it will raise money by stopping theft and corruption. The AAP will stop the "loot" carried out by leaders of the two parties, he said."We will stop the loot and recover the money. Every single penny of Gujarat government will be spent on you," Arvind Kejriwal told the gathering. He said the guarantee is applicable to all youth from the state, irrespective of the leaders they support.Recalling a group of youth shouting "Modi, Modi" when he came out of the airport in Vadodara recently, Arvind Kejriwal said he would not ask them to change their slogan."I would like to tell you from this stage that I will never ask you to change your slogan, you are free to raise a slogan for him. But if we form a government, we will give you a job and unemployment allowance as well. Those people shouting slogans are also ours. The entire country is ours, the entire Gujarat is ours," he said.Arvind Kejriwal also targeted the Gujarat BJP government over cases of exam question paper leak and said if voted to power, the AAP government will open such cases."Leaders who have played with the future of the youth will be sent to jail. We will ensure there is no paper leak in Gujarat. And if anyone dares, we will bring a law with a provision of 10 years imprisonment," he said."While the paper leak happens in Gujarat, the Central Bureau of Investigation conducts raids on (Delhi Deputy CM and Education Minister) Manish Sisodia and AAP in Delhi," he claimed.Punjab CM Mann urged the youth to use their energy positively to change the government in Gujarat."For the first time it has happened in 27 years that (senior BJP leader) Amit Shah went to inaugurate a government school (in Gujarat). He is forced to pay attention to the education sector, but didn't do so in the past," the AAP leader claimed.Bhagwant Mann said the AAP has set the narrative that politics based on religion, caste, and allurement money will not work."Votes will be given only on the politics of work," he said.Bhagwant Mann claimed the BJP and said its leaders only know how to speak and not to listen to the public.PromotedListen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com"If you have done 'Mann Ki Baat,' then why do it again on radio (referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's programme)? Listen to the public's 'mann ki baat'. But they have no habit of listening," he said.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

Switching from one state university to another in the middle of a UG or PG course will soon be a reality in Gujarat. If everything goes as per plan, nine state universities are ready to implement an Academic Bank of Credit system for students enrolled in the course this year, enabling them to switch to another university before completing the course without compromising on the credit score for subjects and the course.A crucial part of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, ABC is a virtual storehouse to keep a record of all students’ credits earned through the course. The credits will be valid for seven years after they are deposited in the repository. If sources are to be believed, the consensus has been reached on the implementation of the ABC for all students and work to chalk out common credits has also been completed.Officials said the nine universities that are preparing to implement ABC are Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta University, Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Gujarat University (GU), Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Saurashtra University, Shree Somnath Sanskrit University, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Shri Govind Guru University and Sardar Patel University.“A few months back universities were assigned tasks to prepare common credits. GU was assigned the task of preparing a credit structure for UG, PG science courses, Saurashtra University for commerce, South Gujarat University for arts courses and SPU along with its partner university to prepare management course credit. As the task has been completed by a majority of the universities, Vice Chancellors have agreed to implement it from the next year after riposting the credits from this year,” said a source in know of the development.Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Himanshu Pandya said the varsity has been mapping the credits of students going to foreign universities and giving transfer to limited students every year to other universities without hassles. “However implementation of the ABC is a step in the right direction as it will give students an opportunity to not only change the university in the middle of the course or before completing it from one university, it will also help universities to adapt to the right and global methods of academics. As consensus has been reached about implementation of ABC, we are waiting for the process to roll further,” said Pandya.Apart from the state universities under the University Grants Commission, varsities like Gujarat Technological University (GTU) that falls under purview of All India Committee for Technical Education (AICTE) have also decided to also go ahead.GTU VC Navin Sheth said “In the meeting, I highlighted practical problems we may face while implementing ABC. For example, credits are earned paper-wise and at times credits are assigned for subjects. We need to have a capsule credit system where students are allowed to take up online courses in case a part of the syllabus is different from others. We have been transferring credits and subject mapping for 300-400 students going abroad for a semester or so.”The state education department is expected to roll out the process and benefits from the next academic year.
