AHMEDABAD: Three persons were apprehended by Bavla police on Thursday for flying a drone near the site of PM Narendra Modi’s rally in the town. Rumours flew about the drone being taken down by a laser gun by the National Security Guard (NSG). But local police officials said that the speculations were unsubstantiated. According to Bavla police, the area of the rally and its 2km periphery had been declared a no-drone-flying zone by a notification issued by the additional district magistrate on November 11. A constable with the local crime branch spotted the microdrone at 4.30pm from near the perimeter wall of the parking area of the rally site. “The persons were apprehended and the drone was taken down immediately. The drone was checked thoroughly, and it was found to be filming,” said a senior police official. “A team of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) also checked the drone. The persons were not in possession of any suspicious objects.” The three persons were identified as Nikul Parmar, Rakesh Bharvad, and Rajesh Prajapati, all residents of Odhav in Ahmedabad. Amit Vasava, the SP of Ahmedabad Rural, told TOI that the three persons have been booked for violating the notification. “The drone is in operable condition. The persons were questioned thoroughly when they mentioned that they were hired to take pictures and shoot videos,” he said. “They were not aware that it was a no-drone-flying area. Further probe is on.” Sources aware of developments said that the officials of Uttam Dairy (Ahmedabad District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd) were entrusted with the task of getting their supporters to the rally. A senior official had reportedly hired the team to record the crowd gathered for the PM’s rally as proof for the cooperative and for the party’s officials.
