AHMEDABAD: While most part of the state received rain on Thursday, the Sardar Sarovar on the Narmada river reached 79.63% of its capacity, with 7,532.90 MCM (million cubic metres) of water presently stored. The water level in the Sardar Sarovar, which currently has inflows of 69,607 cusecs, is now at 132.49m, just 6.4m below the full reservoir level. Official data reveals that on July 28, the dam level was 130.86m and storage was 7,119.56 MCM. In one week, the dam has received 400 MCM of water. The Sardar Sarovar on August 4 last year had 4,416.65 MCM of water, about 3,116.25 MCM less than on August 4 this year. Officials said the Sardar Sarovar has 70.5% more water this year than last year. An statement from the water resources department said the average water storage levels of the 207 major water reservoirs in the state was 68.03% as of Thursday. The statement said 33 reservoirs are full, while 48 reservoirs, including the Sardar Sarovar dam, have between 70% and 100% of their capacity. The combined water storage of the 206 reservoirs other than the Sardar Sarovar is 17,187.66 MCM, the release added. At the same point last year, these 206 dams had 11,999.52 MCM, about 5,188.14 MCM less. There are still 38 reservoirs which are between 25% and 50% full and 52 are less than 25% full, the statement said. The 33 dams that are full have been placed on alert, as widespread rain has was recorded in several districts on Thursday. Water resources department officials said the worrying factor is that storage level in the 15 dams of North Gujarat is just 27.24%. On Thursday, these dams had 526.61 MCM of water, against 472.93 MCM on August 4 last year. The 17 dams in Central Gujarat have 44.19% of their storage capacity, while those in Saurashtra have 55.54%, Kutch 70.17% and South Gujarat 74.53%.
