Hooch tragedy

Four directors and an employee of the Amos Company, who were summoned by the police in connection with the Barwala hooch tragedy, have filed anticipatory bail applications before the court of the Additional Sessions judge in Botad. The hearing of the plea will take place on Saturday.Samir Patel, Rajit Choksi, Pankaj Patel and Chandu Patel — all directors of Amos company — had moved anticipatory bail applications before the Gujarat High Court fearing arrest after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) issued them summons to appear for questioning. They cited special circumstances and media hype over the hooch tragedy for approaching the HC.However, they withdrew it after the HC declined to entertain it on the ground that the bail applications should first be moved in the lower Botad court as per statute. Meanwhile Rajendrakumar Dasadia, an employee of the company, also moved an anticipatory bail application after being summoned by the police.“Five persons have filed anticipatory bail applications in the court of Additional Sessions Judge in Botad and its hearing will take place on Saturday. These include four directors of Amos company and one Rajendrakumar Dasadia as his name surfaced during the investigation,” said Utpal Dave, special prosecutor inthe case.Primary investigation has revealed that 600-litre methyl alcohol was supplied to the bootleggers in Barwala taluka of Botad district by an employee of the company. Forty-six persons lost their lives and several were taken seriously ill after consuming the hooch. The SIT has also issued a lookout notice against Samir Patel and moved an application before the court to implicate him, and other accused, in the case.
