Institutes surrender 10,000 diploma seats of management quota

Lukewarm response to degree and diploma engineering courses has forced several colleges and institutes to surrender management quota seats to the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). ACPC officials said as many as 38 degree engineering colleges have given up seats while close to 10,000management quota seats in diploma engineering institutes have been surrendered till now.The ACPC and Admission Committee for Professional Diploma Courses (ACPDC) conducts an online admission process on 50% of seats while admission on the rest of the 50% seats are conducted by the institutes under management quota. There are a total 66,000 seats in degree engineering where admissions are conducted after class 12 Science and around 66,000 seats in diploma courses, pursued after class 10.The huge gap in supply and demand in the engineering courses has been a subject of discussion for long as year after year colleges, particularly in rural areas, come forward to surrender the seats.“If colleges go out to look for students on their own to fill-up management quota seats, they are not going to get the students. The number of eligible students who can participate in admission process are limited and colleges have to follow norms of merit as laid down by the education department. This doesn’t leave much room for colleges to go out of the way to look for students to fill up the seats. If they go through the admission committee, they are going to get students qualifying in the merit list,” said a senior official working in the admission committee.In-charge member-secretary ACPC Ketan Badgujar said surrendering management quota seats indicates the struggle colleges go through. “This also means that it is going to be survival of the fittest. Colleges with good infrastructure, facility and placement record will get a good number of students while those in rural and semi-urban areas with lack of facilities will struggle to get students. Surrendering seats to ACPC will only help them get better and meritorious students in decent numbers,” he said.In diploma courses, five institutes have surrendered partial management quota seats while 55 institutes have surrendered entire management quota seats totalling 9,959 seats.
