A case of hacking that had terrorised students and teachers alike of a city school for the past two years seems to have made headway.Cyber crime sleuths said they have received several inputs in the case of an unknown person infiltrating online classes of Anand Niketan Satellite school in October 2020 and sending four threatening emails to a teacher to postpone exams at the height of the Covid pandemic.“The case is still under investigation. We cannot divulge details of the investigation as we are still on it and are hopeful of cracking the case,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Cell, Amit Vasava. The Ahmedabad cyber cell had taken the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the case as the suspects had used the dark web to infiltrate online classes of the school and later send emails to teachers. One of the juvenile suspects’ houses was raided by an IPS officer in connection with the probe. The cyber cell had seized the suspect’s mobile phone and laptop, but could not find any evidence. The teenager was later sent to Dubai by his parents where he died by suicide. Investigations are on to track the real accused. The suspect who is not traceable according to the cyber crime cell had sent threat mails through VPN (Virtual Private Network) in addition to TOR (Online Router). VPN provides a protected connection when using public networks. VPNs encrypt the user’s internet traffic and disguise the user’s online identity. This makes it difficult for third parties to track user’s activities online and steal data.A bank account (**22****001****) of a resident of Goregaon East was used to buy premium VPN services for using dark web to infiltrate online classes and then sending four mails to a teacher to postpone the online exams. Gujarat police sources said emails to the teacher sent on September 8 and September 10, 2020, included names of seven girl students of the school. Police sources said other mails were sent to the same teacher on September 12 and September 29. According to sources, the SM-A105F model handset with a serial number R*8*62***** was used on the first occasion, while the handset used to send mails had IMEI number 8****450***18***. The mobile phone used was a Vivo 1819 model. In October 2020, a cyber stalker had sent threat mails to Anand Niketan to postpone online exams and threatened to circulate morphed pictures of girl students on social media. The school filed a complaint with cyber cell. In August 2021, the stalker again sent four e-mails and two messages to a teacher to postpone the exams.

Central University of Gujarat has rusticated a masters degree student accused of sexual harassment. However, on humanitarian grounds, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has proposed in its report to allow the accused to appear for the final year MA exam in German, starting at the end of this month, as a one-time opportunity and allow him entry inside the campus only to appear for the exam.Officials at the CUG said the rustication will result in the student not being allowed to utilize any of the varsity facilities, including the hostel. Usually, rusticated students are not allowed to appear for any exam, however CUG has adopted a humanitarian approach. Accused Chhittarajan Kumar is a student in the final year of MA program.A female student at CUG had filed a complaint of sexual harassment against the accused on March 18 stating that the incident took place during Dhuleti celebration when she was walking out of the campus. The accused allegedly forced her to join and dragged her against her will. Other students joined him, lifted her and threw her in the coloured water. A complaint was filed only against Kumar.Vice Chancellor Rama Shanker Dubey told Mirror, “Based on the hearing of the accused and complaint filed by the victim, the committee proposed to rusticate the accused student with immediate effect, with one time opportunity to pass the exam as he is in final year.”The action report issued by the varsity, a copy of which is with Ahmedabad Mirror, notes that he is being permitted to appear for his scheduled end semester examination. “This shall be one time-opportunity to him as a special case. He will be allowed to enter the university campus and premises only half an hour before the exam and have to leave campus immediately after the exam. He shall not be admitted to any programmes of CUG in future, after appearing in end-semester examination,” the order noted. He is also debarred from various university premises- campuses, library, class-rooms, laboratories, canteens, hostels etc. The accused student will be allowed a one-time entry to his hostel room to pick up his luggage, if any, in presence of the warden/ caretakers and his name is delisted from his class, the centre, the university social media or any other groups.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the youths who had cleared physical tests in the last two years must be given chance to appear in the written exam for joining the Indian Army, instead of implementing the ‘Agnipath’ scheme. While reiterating his demand for roll back of the scheme, he, in a statement, said that it is ridiculous that from last two years, thousands of youth have cleared the physical test of armed forces but they have not been called for the written exam.On the contrary, the NDA government had, in a whimsical move, introduced the ‘Agnipath’ scheme which allows short service of four years to youths in the army sans any pension.Mann said this is grave injustice with the youth of the country who want to serve their motherland by joining the Indian Army. The Chief Minister said the Union government must take back this scheme and allow the youth, who had cleared their physical test in last two years, to sit in the written exam.He said this will give them a fair chance to join the Indian Army and serve their motherland.
