Several national leaders of the BJP, besides CMs and office-bearers from other states, have descended on Gujarat for campaigning. State BJP chief C R Paatil, however, is conspicuous by his absence at such rallies barring those by tallest BJP leaders like Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.Sources close to Paatil said, “His focus is on conducting ground-level work and not addressing public rallies. Mobilising the cadre, coordinating with the high command and leaders from other states is his forte. Though he’s a BJP star campaigner, he is essentially an ‘organisational’ leader.”Paatil had won the 2019 General Elections from Navsari with a record margin of 6.89 lakh votes. He is often heard stressing on merits of ground-level work, mobilisation of workers, page pramukhs etc. A page pramukh in the BJP draws his name from the fact that he is responsible for mobilising voters listed on a single page of the voters’ list.”Paatil is frequently seen only in the rallies held in South Gujarat where he has a stronghold. He is neither seen at party headquarters Kamalam or the BJP media centre. Paatil’s last press conference was about BJP’s novel experiment of “carpet bombing” multiple constituencies with public rallies of its senior state and national leaders.A BJP leader confided, “The state president is busy with ground-level work. He reports important data points and trends to the high command and indulges in ‘firefighting’ as and when required.”Meanwhile, the job of communicating with the voters is being handled by PM Modi and Amit Shah besides likes of central ministers Mansukh Mandavia and Parsottam Rupala, national BJP President JP Nadda, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Assam CM Hemant Bishwa Sharma and Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.
