Seven Congress MLAs of Gujarat have cross-voted in the presidential election, polling for which was held on Monday. NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu polled an additional ten votes from the state.NCP MLA Kandhal Jadeja and two BTP MLAs Chhotu Vasava and Màhésh Vasava voted for Murmu. In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, BJP has 111 members and Congress 63, while one is independent.The opposition Congress leaders were in for a shock once the results were declared. There were speculations about 2-3 Congress MLAs cross-voting, but the number came out to be 7.This would eventually reduce the number of Congress MLAs to 56. Though the names of MLAs who cross-voted were not known, it is a foregone conclusion that they will switch sides before polls.Murmu got a total 121 votes, while UPA candidate got 57 votes only. The total votes polled were 17,787 for Murmu and 8,379 for Yashwant Sinha.Four seats are vacant as two have expired. While one Ashwin Kotwal who switched sides to BJP has been disqualified and could not vote. Pabhubha Manek of BJP from Dwarka is also facing disqualification and could not vote.
