Till last year, students had to file an affidavit to appear as a private student.School principals said that the format of the form is similar to that of the format provided for the affidavit. Votes garnered by an Independent candidate, who’s contesting simultaneously from Matar (Kheda dist) and Anand (Khambhat dist) constituencies will determine the outcome for BJP whose candidates have been winning from the two seats for the last four terms.Mahipatsinh Chauhan is a former sarpanch of Laval village in Vaso taluka of Kheda district. He has been working at the grassroots level in the education sector and is aggressively campaigning in the two constituencies like major parties. He is the only Independent candidate this time who’s fighting from two constituencies.BJP has fielded Kalpesh Parmar from Matar after dropping incumbent Kesrisinh Solanki who had won in 2017 by a thin margin of 2,404 votes. Solanki rebelled and joined AAP, only to return to BJP within 24 hours. In Khambhat, BJP has repeated Mahesh aka Mayur Rawal who had won by a slender margin of 2,318 votes in 2017.Congress has repeated Sanjay Patel from Matar and nominated Chirag Patel from Khambhat. Political observers believe BJP has an uphill task in both the constituencies this time.Khambhat has been the BJP bastion since 1990 and its candidates have won over the years. Kesrisinh Solanki had won twice. Before him, Devusinh Chauhan had also won twice. Rakesh Rao had won in 2002. Even the Aam Aadmi Party has fielded candidates from both the seats, which will make the contest all the more interesting this time.Chauhan’s political journey is interesting. The 36-year-old worked with a private company in Kolkata between 2009 and 2016. He returned to his village and was elected sarpanch of Laval Gram Panchayat. Later, he was disqualified following a complaint filed by then BJP MLA Kesrisinh Solanki. He later challenged his dismissal in the HC.He founded Sarva Samaj Sena and education campus Sikshan E j Kalyan, which got overwhelming response from the youth. He had joined AAP and got ticket from Matar. Later, his name was dropped by AAP following which he filed papers as an Independent.Chauhan was banished from six districts including Kheda via an order by the collector in 2020 for disobedience during workers’ protest.Talking to Mirror, Chauhan said, “I am contesting the polls because people want change in Matar and Kheda districts. I hold public rallies in 20 villages on a rotation basis. BJP and Congress have fielded illiterate candidates while the voters want an educated representative.”

AHMEDABAD: While committees have been appointed for translating medical textbooks into Gujarati, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has already started translating textbooks of engineering courses in the local language. The task of translation has been taken up in light of the National Education Policy (NEP). GTU vice-chancellor Navin Sheth said that engineering textbooks have about 20 lakh words. "About 3 lakh technical words are often used. Our teams have translated about 50,000 of these technical terms into Gujarati. These translated terms have also been approved by a 22-member expert committee," Sheth said. Sheth said that the committee included 15 Sanskrit language experts too. Sources said that the translated terminology includes words from electrical, mechanical and electronics courses. Sources said that in the next phase about 1.5 lakh words and terms will be translated into Gujarati. On October 29, the state department of higher education had announced that a 19-member committee has been set up to prepare and submit a roadmap for translating engineering subject textbooks and textbooks of medical, dental, physiotherapy and nursing courses. The committee set up by the department of higher education is headed by the vice-chancellor of the National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar, and has deans of government medical colleges and VCs of various universities. Sources said that a meeting of the committee was also held after its creation. It was decided in the meeting to form a committee at the state level to delegate responsibilities.
