Use of Gujarati in HC: Next hearing on Dec 1

A public interest writ petition has been filed seeking to officially implement Gujarati language, in addition to English, in the routine judicial process in the Gujarat High Court. The State Government and the Central Government are named as respondents in the PIL. The court has posted further hearing of the plea on December 1.It was submitted that the Gujarat Assembly was in favour of making the change, based on the opinion of the council of ministers. However, the Supreme Court in October 2012 had refused to make the Gujarati language official, besides English, in the Gujarat High Court. In 1977 and 1991, the Gujarati Language Review Committee constituted by the government had recommended gradual increase in the usage of Gujarati in the HC and had asked the state government to seek President’s nod in this regard. This recommendation was accepted by the government in 2012.In 2016, the Supreme Court refused to apply Gujarati language as an additional medium in the High Court. A similar proposal came from the states of Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Karnataka. The plea contended that even the litigants, and some of the lawyers representing them, face difficulty in understanding English. AM
